MAYA BEN DAVID and ALVIN LUONG

MAYA|ALVIN3

January 23 – February 1, 2016

Opening reception: Saturday, January 23 6 – 8

Trinity Square Video is excited to present new works by Maya Ben David and Alvin Luong created during our first annual summer student commission competition as part of Video Fever 2015.

Maya Ben David explores anthropomorphism in popular culture through her video installation “The Air Conditioner Monologues” (2:49). Ben David personifies the Air Conditioner character from Jerry Rees’s The Brave Little Toaster (1987) and reanimates the Air Conditioner’s final monologue before he self-destructs. Ben David accompanies this work with her video “Air Canada Gal” (00:49) where she further examines the sub culture of personifying and sexualizing machines.

Alvin Luong becomes a painting in “Multiformat Multiform.” The two-act video project exports the formal terms of mid-century Modern painting to the experience of sensory deprivation. The project considers the potentials of achieving an embodied formalist aesthetic with a sleeping mask, respirator, and a pair of earmuffs.
