Trinity Square Video is excited to announce our 2018 Summer-Student Artists in Residence. Selected by TSV’s programming committee, as part of this year’s Video Fever program, Maria Patricia Abuel and Jamie Milay Kasiama have already demonstrated exceptional work as emerging media artists and Trinity Square Video is proud to support them in the creation of two new works.

Maria Patricia Abuel is a Toronto born and raised Filipina multidisciplinary artist. Her practice involves questioning issues of hybrid identity, femininity, and conservative expectations. She challenges traditional frameworks within cultures and artistic practices with a playful deploy of irony. She is currently working toward her Studio Specialist, Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Toronto Scarborough.

Jamie Milay Kasiama is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice includes video art, photography, performance, theatre, collage, installation, sound, and poetry. Jamie is primarily interested in creating performance-based works that challenge the notion of binaries while exploring lateral violence and power dynamics within marginalized communities. Jamie has just completed their academic thesis project, “because I am not a girl or a boy”, an autobiographical, immersive, performance and installation piece exploring the construction and fluidity of individual identity. Currently, Jamie is developing “SANCTION”, a sound poem piece exploring intimate partner violence in queer relationships, with House & Body as part of their inaugural Playwrights Initiative. Jamie is also developing a performance text titled “All the Fruits that Rot in Our Bellies” with the support of the Women’s Work Playwrights collective.
