Bear Witness has often tasked his work with claiming space for Indigenous people in the urban landscape of North America. Witness’s new video, The Place (2016), continues this mission. As an iconic landmark for his years growing up in downtown Toronto in the 1980s and ’90s, Witness seeks to not only take over the physical space of Ontario Place with his video intervention, but to interact with the content being screened alongside his work. Utilizing excerpts from In the Labyrinth as the back drop for his video remix—a National Film Board film made for Expo ’67—Witness then calls upon a host of Hollywood Indians to help him reclaim “the place.”

A founding member of A Tribe Called Red and The NDN Talent Collective, Ehren Thomas aka Bear Witness, produces experimental video installation and screen works. He is the recipient of four Aboriginal People’s Choice Music Awards, a Juno award and the Emerging Artist award from the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival. He exhibited his solo show The Only Good NDN at the Sydney Festival in Australia. His video work has screened at prestigious film festivals around the world including the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, the Berlinale and the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
