The imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival, the National Film Board of Canada and Trinity Square Video open ICE FISHING in TSV’s Gallery Space.
Recently named the BMO Artist of the Year by the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council, Jordan Bennett has shown his multidisciplinary work in Australia and New York, and in major galleries all over Canada. For this project, Bennett returns to his hometown – Stephenville Crossing, Newfoundland – to reconnect with his Mi’kmaq heritage and build an ice fishing shack with his father. At a time when Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation is re-examing itself under its recently acquired legal status, Bennett highlights the connection between traditional skills and personal strength, using an experience of familial bonding to retrieve distant memories from both his personal and cultural past.
For Ice Fishing, material collected from this trip is reconfigured into an interactive installation where virtual ice fishing holes, immersive audio, video, programmatic animation and photography turn an urban gallery floor into a rich fishing ground for story and reflection on time-honoured customs.
