Challenging Norms: Sculptures, and Diaspora Aesthetics 

Artist talk/Workshop with Sean Sandusky

In conjunction with the exhibition Networked Justice, Sean Sandusky will be hosting an artist talk/workshop on challenging sculptural norms and diaspora aesthetics.

Soul Archipelago (image above) is Sandusky’s ongoing project that fosters solidarity and attachment to environmental and traditional entities. In this project the artist draws upon the dissociating experience of multi-ethnicity as well as the back-and-forth movement from one political, environmental and economic climate to another. Sandusky’s auto-ethnographic practice is situated between Toronto, Canada, and Honolulu, Hawai’i. This iteration of Soul Archipelago addresses the attention that needs to be cultivated to our relationship to bodies of water.

In this artist talk and workshop, Sandusky will be explaining the influences of their South Asian diasporic heritage and Pacific upbringing that shapes the discourse of their work currently. Topics of relational aesthetics and diaspora will be highlighted alongside the artist’s own challenges and experiences of creating Three-Dimensional work with a hand-eye coordination physical disability. Participants will be guided on how to create works out of already made objects and used material as well as giving how to represent a sculptural practice in less diverse and challenging fields.
