Trinity Square Video, 401 Richmond Street West

To launch the inaugural opening of the “Traversal” Residency Program, artist-in-resident Lorena Salomé will be in conversation with media-based artist Alexandra Gelis and filmmaker Jorge Lozano. Salomé, Gelis, and Lozano will reflect on their shared experiences as immigrant artists who continue to work in different geographical, social and cultural environments. The dialogue will focus on the anecdotes surrounding artistic production, as their work responses directly to the unexpected and unknown encounters when making visible the invisible of power relations and dynamic of human and non-human migration.

Lorena Salomé is a Toronto- based artist with a background in science, film and a BFA from OCAD University. She incorporates various technologies in her work using everyday objects and dismantled electronics to make sound sculptures and robots. From the early video works to the kinetic installations there is always a point in common, the use of found and repurposed objects. Her work has been exhibited and published locally and internationally since 2003. Salomé has taught electronics and video in several institutions, such as OCAD University, University of Windsor, ArtexArte Gallery (Argentina) and rural schools in Argentina.

Alexandra Gelis is a Colombian-Venezuelan artist living and working in Toronto, Ontario. Her studio practice combines new media, installation, and photography with custom built interactive electronics. Her projects incorporate personal field research as a tool to investigate the ecologies of various landscapes through examining the traces left by various socio-political interventions. She uses data capture techniques, video, sound, and spatial and electronic media to create documentary based immersive installations; single-channel videos, and experimental photography. She has exhibited internationally in North and South America, Europe as well as Ethiopia in Africa.

Jorge Lozano Lorza is an immigrant artist and filmmaker born in Colombia. He has been painting and filming, and making videos, sound, performance and installation works since he came to Canada in 1971. He has made over 150 movies—works that live not in-between, but within cultures. His work is a reflection of his personal commitment to epistemological disobedience and the investigation of different ways of thinking, feeling and doing.
