Communicating through the Body: Strategies for performance-based video

Camouflage1Chun

November 30 / 6pm-9pm / with soJin Chun

Artist soJin Chun discusses the history, the tendencies, and methodologies of performance art and its relationship to video. Creating a timeline of performance-based video art starting in the 1960’s, participants get an overview of its history in the context of contemporary and conceptual art practice.  After this brief presentation, the instructor also shares with participants her performance-based video work, discussing some of her personal strategies, methods, and processes. In the last part of the  session, each participant shares with the group some of his/her/their ideas on performance-based video projects in order to come up with a strategy for making them a reality.  Participants are encouraged to bring a written paragraph of their future or work-in-progress projects.

BIO

Through artist residencies in Serbia, Bolivia, Brazil, and Taiwan, Chun has developed a personal style of storytelling using humour to reveal complex social issues. Her video work includes performance-based actions where her body becomes a political tool for revealing the everyday reality within a specific local context. She was part of a collective project at CAPACETE, an artist residency with 12 International artists for a period of 9-months.  Through collaboration and the collective living experience, this group programs workshops, artists discussions, think tanks, and art projects in alternative spaces outside of traditional gallery spaces.

Chun has participated in video screening and exhibitions in Bolivia, Brazil, France, Sweden, Germany, Spain, South Africa, Taiwan, and the USA.  In 2016, she was included in screenings in Berlin (Germany), Paris (France), Brussels (Belgium), Sao Paulo (Brazil), and Santiago (Chile).  soJin Chun was awarded one of the top 10 projects for an exhibition as part of the Biennale of Visual Arts in Santa Cruz, Bolivia at the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo.  In 2013, soJin had a solo exhibition at Tragaluz Digital in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, as part of Fotonoviembre, a Biennale photography festival. Chun’s video works are represented by GIV (Montreal), CFMDC (Toronto), and V-Tape (Toronto).  She is also in a collection at the Artist Pension Trust, one of the largest global collections of contemporary art. Chun has a B.A. in Applied Arts from Ryerson University and a Masters in Communications and Culture from Ryerson/York Universities.
