Studio Session: Erika DeFreitas + Francisco-Fernando Granados
Friday, March 01, 3–6PM
Trinity Square Video

Studio Session is a process-based collaborative project between artists Erika DeFreitas and Francisco-Fernando Granados. The 3-hour action created in the context of Disputed Bodies marks the beginning of an ongoing collaboration exploring relationships between the body, text, and abstraction. This first iteration of Studio Session will extend the role of the gallery from a space of exhibition to one of production, presenting the emergence of a collaborative process. The process will involve material, conceptual, and compositional elements drawn from each of our individual practices as points of departure for a new body of work.

Erika DeFreitas is a Scaborough-based artist whose practice includes the use of performance, photography, video, installation, textiles, works on paper, and writing. Placing an emphasis on process, gesture, the body, documentation, and paranormal phenomena, she works through attempts to understand concepts of loss, post-memory, inheritance, objecthood. DeFreitas’ work has been exhibition nationally and internationally including Project Row Houses and the Museum of African American Culture, Houston; Fort Worth Contemporary Arts; Ulrich Museum of Art, Wichita; Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery; Platform Centre for Photographic and Digital Arts, Winnipeg; and Gallery 44, Toronto.

Francisco-Fernando Granados is a Toronto-based artist and writer. His multidisciplinary critical practice spans drawing, performance, installation, cultural theory, digital media, public art and community-based projects. His has presented work in galleries, museums, theatres, artist-run centres and non-traditional sites since 2005. These venues include the Art Gallery of Ontario, Mercer Union, Art Gallery of York University, Gallery TPW, Trinity Square Video, Images Festival, Nuit Blanche (Toronto), Vancouver Art Gallery, Darling Foundry (Montreal), MacLaren Art Centre (Barrie), Queens University (Kingston), Neutral Ground (Regina), Third Space (St. John), Hessel Museum of Art (NY), Defibrillator Gallery (Chicago), Voices Breaking Boundaries (TX), Ex Teresa Arte Actual (Mexico City), Kulturhuset (Stockholm), and Theatre Academy University of the Arts (Helsinki).
