PROGRAMMING: Artist Talk with Julian Gallese

Artist Talk with Guest Animator Julian Gallese
TAIS 2018 International Artist in Residence

Thursday, May 31, 2018
7pm @ TAIS, 1411 Dufferin St. Unit B
Reception to follow

Over the course of a month in studio, Julian has produced a 360 immersive animation with the working title “Banana Bread”. Created in his style of 2D classical animation, Julian will present this new work as a part of his talk, alongside a few other pieces from his portfolio of work.

Project statement by Julian Gallese:

“For my time at TAIS, I will take advantage of the studio and its equipment to do something I couldn’t do in my own home, create a 360-video of a new animated short hand drawn film. Producing a Virtual Reality work will create a gateway to be inside one of my movies, making it a much more immersive experience which is what I ultimately seek with film making. This film will include two main narratives, set in two different gardens; both full of animated characters and small situations going on around the viewer. The whole video will be a seamless loop, and during it, both gardens will be alternating to allow options for exploring different transitions using both visual and sound elements. I am mainly interested in the medium that the project will be presented in. I will keep the animation short (1 minute max), but since it’s looping, it can be viewed for as long as the viewer wants. It will be a contemplative film about the characters interacting with each other – or the viewer- in this eerie garden.”
