Summer Night in Islamabad is an oil painting with accompanying sound that depicts a cloudy and lightning filled night sky. Two figures sit together on a rooftop. Overhead a great Indian fruit bat flies towards a jamun tree, stray dogs bark on the street below. This scene is based on a moment in the recent past, in the artist’s hometown in Pakistan. For the artist, Pakistan is somewhere between a dream and reality.
Misbah Ahmed is a Pakistani-Canadian visual artist based in Toronto. Her work examines duality, shifting cultural landscapes and the day-to-day human experience. Specifically, exploring narratives within the Pakistani diaspora. Primarily working with oil paint and ceramic sculpture, her creative process and methodologies use a hybrid of modern and cultural techniques. Maintaining and continuing generational practices in her work, and using those practices as a vehicle to reconnect with ancestral landscapes.
